Romance shouldn’t have accessibility as a barrier. And yet, for so many couples navigating mobility needs, sensory sensitivities, or simply wanting to know what they’re walking into before they arrive, finding the right retreat takes a lot more than a beautiful Instagram feed and a good review score.
Here’s what to actually look for — and why more boutique properties are getting this right.
Look for properties that invite the conversation
The first sign of a genuinely accessible property isn’t a checklist — it’s an invitation. Properties that are serious about accessibility make it easy to ask questions before you book, provide honest and detailed information, and actively welcome guests to discuss their individual needs.
If a property’s website has nothing about accessibility, or buries it in fine print, that tells you something. If it has a dedicated page and a direct contact for questions, that tells you something too.
Check pathways, not just rooms
A beautiful cottage means nothing if you can’t comfortably get to it. Before booking, ask specifically about:
- The surface between the car park and the cottage entrance
- Steps, slopes, or uneven terrain on the route
- Whether pathways are stable and suitable for mobility aids
Many older boutique properties have charm but challenging terrain. The good ones have invested in upgrading these areas without losing their character.
Ask about bathrooms honestly
Bathrooms are where accessibility details matter most and are least often disclosed upfront. Spa baths, while romantic, typically require stepping over a rim — worth knowing before you arrive. Walk-in showers, grab rails, and step-free entries make a meaningful difference.
Don’t be afraid to ask directly.
Consider sensory environment
For guests with sensory sensitivities — whether to scent, sound, light, or texture — a property’s environment matters enormously. Rainforest retreats tend to perform well here naturally: quiet settings, natural light, minimal artificial fragrance. But it’s worth asking whether a property can accommodate specific requests like scent-free cleaning products or lighting adjustments.
Confirm service animal policies before you book
Many boutique properties have no-pet policies that may create uncertainty for guests travelling with certified assistance or service animals. Always confirm in advance — reputable properties will have a clear, welcoming policy.
Prioritise small and personal over large and institutional
Large resorts often have accessibility infrastructure but can lack the personal touch that makes a difference in practice. Boutique properties with hands-on owners often adapt more readily to individual needs — and genuinely want to get it right. There’s a difference between a hotel that ticks compliance boxes and a host who personally ensures your stay works for you.
Lovestone Cottages is a welcoming retreat for everyone
At Lovestone Cottages in Montville, we believe that time in nature should be available to everyone. It’s not a tagline — it’s an ongoing commitment that shapes how we maintain and improve the property.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Our original wooden boardwalks have been upgraded to modern, accessible pathways, providing a smooth and continuous flow from the parking area to each cottage — suitable for guests with limited mobility. Each cottage has a dedicated parking space located close to the entrance, and we’re happy to assist with luggage on arrival.
Inside the cottages, walk-in showers are standard across all three retreats. Spa baths are available and beloved — though it’s worth noting they require stepping over a rim. We’re always happy to discuss which cottage layout might suit you best before you book.
For guests with sensory sensitivities, Lovestone is a naturally quiet environment — deep in the rainforest, away from traffic and noise. We can prepare cottages with scent-sensitive cleaning products or lighting adjustments on request.
Certified service and assistance animals are always welcome. Please let us know in advance so we can ensure a smooth arrival.
Lovestone is also a proudly inclusive, LGBTQIA+ welcoming space. Every couple deserves a retreat where they feel completely at ease — and that’s exactly the environment we’ve created.
We’re honest about where we’re still improving. Our heritage-style cottages are not fully disability-certified, and some of the deeper rainforest trails remain natural terrain. But we are committed to continuously improving our property and our guest experience — and we genuinely welcome the conversation.
If you have specific accessibility requirements or questions before booking, Tamara and the team would love to hear from you:
Because the right retreat is the one where you can truly relax — from the moment you arrive.
