Did you know you can easily recycle foil products?

Here on the Sunshine Coast we can recycle our foil products through our general
recycling bin.

Simply rinse and dry your used foil products (alfoil, aluminium trays, champagne
capsules, chocolate foil wrapping, tea light candles etc) and then crunch them into a golf ball to tennis ball size.

This ball-like shape helps to differentiate them when being sorted with the lightweight paper at the recycling sorting facility.

If you bin it flat it can float
away and may not go through the right machine.
Its easy, give it a go.

Do you know where bats like to relax? In the bat-tub!

Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! Megabats (Megachiroptera), better known as flying-foxes or fruit bats, are a vital part of our ecosystem; flying-foxes allow our forests to grow and thrive through long-distance pollination. As aptly put by Wildlife Queensland, “while everyone sleeps, flying-foxes make forests!”.

No need to wing it, here are some batty good ways to celebrate:
- Found a sick or injured bat? Don’t touch, instead call 1300 ANIMAL or a local bat rescue group. They will organise a vaccinated and trained wildlife handler.
- Check out the Wildlife Queensland online shop for bat-tastic merch which supports local conservation.
- Invite flying foxes to your yard by planting native trees and shrubs which not only look great, but smell nice too! Wildlife Queensland recommends: “lillipillies, small eucalypts such as the Plunket mallee (Eucalyptus curtisii), bloodwood (Corymbia intermedia), and other nectar-rich trees and shrubs”.
- Create wildlife-friendly fences by avoiding barbed wire, in which flying-foxes, particularly vulnerable mothers with babies, get caught and trapped.
- Learn more about bats. For example, go on one of Wildlife Queensland’s Batty Boat Cruises: during Summer or Spring, cruise along Brisbane River and see flying-foxes at their battiest best, in their natural environment.

We won’t leave you hanging, here’s one more to drive you batty;
Why was the bat invited to the circus? They make excellent acrobats.

Today (or should we say, tonight) is the final day

Today (or should we say, tonight) is the final day of International Dark Sky Week 2024! DarkSky is urging us to turn off the lights and “discover the night”. IDSW is a worldwide celebration of the dark and natural night, and promotes learning and discovery.

Light pollution affects a myriad of different things on this one Earth of ours, from disrupting bird migration and nocturnal animals’ activity, or adding to climate carbon emissions, to human health (such as interfering with circadian sleep rhythms).
A few ways to Discover the Night: sit on the verandah and look up at the sky, do some ‘Star Hunting’ and identify constellations (https://globeatnight.org/campaigns/) or learn about the 3 different types of twilight (https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/different-types-twilight.html); keep an eye out for our nocturnal neighbours - in the backyard or beyond on a night hike, but please take care of yourself and the environment, REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) shares some tips to ensure a fun and safe post-sunset walk: www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/how-to-hike-at-night.html. Consider investing in a light dimmer or light timer, to reduce the amount of unnecessary light pollution in the home.

The core concept of Dark Sky Week doesn’t end tonight, take in the wonder and awe of the night sky any day of the week.
